Rapid verification variant D phenotype by genotyping in a regional laboratory
Pregnant mothers sometimes form antibodies that target the blood cells of their unborn baby. This can have terrible consequences that include harming the baby's development and death. Since we now know what genes are involved in this process and we have the ability to test for these genes, we can safely perform tests in the early weeks of pregnancy to help clarify the risk of developing harmful antibodies. The highlight of this project is to use our existing knowledge about blood groups to allow your doctor, nurse or midwife to make better decisions about offering treatment. This is of critical importance since there are treatments available to help prevent pregnant mothers from forming these dangerous antibodies. Our goal is to set up a lab testing network so that our regional laboratory can offer this test to pregnant parents throughout eastern Ontario and report results directly to their health care provider. This will help with the better use of this important medication and will maintain safety within our blood system. Since this testing is currently not available here, the Ottawa Hospital (TOH) will partner with the CBS to provide this important blood test to families in our region.
