Platelet / HLA Testing Services Winnipeg, MB - NPIRL

Canadian Blood Services, National Platelet Immunology Reference Laboratory (NPIRL), Winnipeg, MB,  provides HLA and HPA antigen typing and antibody investigation testing to assist health care providers in management of thrombocytopenic patients who require investigation for:

  • Platelet transfusion refractoriness
  • Fetal Neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia (FNAIT)
  • Post transfusion purpura (PTP)
  • Platelet function disorders

In addition, the Laboratory also types blood donors prior to being placed onto a national platelet registry. The registry is used to conduct searches to identify suitably compatible donors who can be used for patients that show no benefit from conventional platelet components.

Testing is provided by the Winnipeg, MB National Platelet Immunology Reference Laboratory for all Canadian locations/facilities.

Critical Values

Diagnostic Services will  provide a faxed report, whenever possible,to the requesting facility or physician in the following cases

  • Positive HLA antibody screen or HPA antibody on a patient refractory to platelet transfusion. 
  • Positive HPA antibody on maternal NAIT sample or suspected PTP.
