Lifetime Achievement Award

Dr. Theodore (Ted) Warkentin is a clinical and laboratory hematologist at Hamilton General Hospital and a Professor Emeritus at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ont.

He specializes in conditions related to blood clotting disorders, with a focus on diseases like heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) and other clotting issues that can lead to serious health problems.

Dr. Warkentin is known for his research into rare blood conditions, including autoimmune HIT and spontaneous HIT, which occur even without exposure to the blood thinner heparin. He also played a key role in understanding how certain vaccines can cause a rare blood disorder known as vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia (VITT).

In addition to his research, Dr. Warkentin has co-edited five editions of a book on HIT, published over 400 scientific papers and given more than 900 presentations worldwide. He continues to be actively involved in patient care, research and teaching.
