Waywayseecappo Wolverines visit the Winnipeg donor centre to learn about the need for Indigenous stem cell registrants from Miranda McLeod. Her son Tanner is looking for a stem cell match and receives blood products regularly.

On February 2, the Waywayseecappo Wolverines hockey team swabbed their cheeks to join the national stem cell registry to support Tanner McLeod, a boy from Cross Lake, Manitoba waiting for a lifesaving stem cell transplant.

Five-year-old Tanner McLeod was only six-months-old when he was diagnosed with a rare blood disorder called sideroblastic anemia. Being unable to produce healthy red blood cells, Tanner needs a blood transfusion every few weeks when his hemoglobin levels drop too low.

Waywayseecappo players were eager to join February’s #GetSwabbed campaign to support Tanner and other patients like him.
