Research resources: Evolving eligibility for gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men
Why is Canadian Blood Services supporting this research?
The programs are providing Canadian evidence critical to support submissions to our regulator to evolve eligibility criteria for blood donation in Canada.
For example, in May 2021 we submitted a research-informed request to Health Canada to enable some gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men to donate plasma at donor centres in Calgary, Alta. and London, Ont. These expanded eligibility criteria came into effect in fall 2021.
More recently, the research informed a request to Health Canada to remove the current waiting period for men who have sex with men and use sexual behaviour-based screening for all donors instead. Our request to make this change was approved in April 2022 and implemented on Sept. 11, 2022.
