A heartfelt thanks: how blood donations changed my life

I consider myself incredibly fortunate to live a life filled with blessings—professionally, personally, and health-wise. I’ve had the opportunity to build a strong professional background, pursue higher education at a top business school, explore the world, hopefully get married, and surround myself with an amazing network of friends, colleagues, and family. I've been able to lead a healthy, fulfilling life, peppered with wonderful moments & memories.

This would have not been possible without the selfless generosity of blood donors, the exceptional medical care in Canada, and the tireless dedication of doctors and nurses who ensure I live a life beyond the typical challenges of my condition.

My name is Ali Asghar Akhtar, and I am living with Beta Thalassemia Major, a condition that requires me to receive regular blood transfusions every five weeks, along with other ongoing treatments. I began receiving blood transfusions at three months. At 40 years old, I’ve had the chance to experience much of what life has to offer, thanks to countless blood donors, volunteers, and employees at CBS. For people like us, blood is our lifeline!

I am eternally grateful not just for blood transfusions, but for a full range of treatments. My parents come from humble beginnings, and without the support from the Canadian healthcare system, I wouldn’t have been able to afford the ongoing medical care required to stay healthy and perhaps wouldn't have made it this far. My parents, originally from India, admire Canada’s active blood donation efforts. As a way of giving back, my dad had always actively participated.

Thanks to blood donors, I’ve been able to pursue my dreams—establish a professional life, travel the world, and achieve major milestones that many people my age aim for or wish they had. These accomplishments wouldn’t have been possible without generous blood donations over the years. As part of giving back and supporting others, I proudly volunteer at my local food bank and serve as a member of the Thalassemia Foundation of Canada

So, to all the donors out there: a heartfelt THANK YOU. Your generosity makes a world of difference. Your passion gives us strength to fight and achieve. Your involvement helps create a brighter future for all of us!

Lastly, if you're in Ontario, please visit the Canadian Blood Services website or your local donation centre to book an appointment. The process is safe, simple, and rewarding.
