Choosing collection locations
Our resources are focused on building a cord blood bank that meets the needs of Canada’s diverse population. The four hospitals selected are providing the required amount and variety of cord blood units needed for a sustainable cord blood bank.
Collection hours
Cord blood collections are performed in hospitals by dedicated, trained Canadian Blood Services Cord Blood Bank staff. Our hours of operation have been determined based on peak labour and delivery times to make the most of our resources. We cannot collect cord blood if our trained personnel are not onsite, which is why donations cannot be performed outside of our operating hours.
We appreciate our donors for understanding that our collections team and hospital staff are working tirelessly to collect as many units as possible, ultimately contributing to saving more lives.

Inspired by a child’s stem cell transplant, an Indigenous parent and her “miracle baby” become cord blood donors
“After watching our friends’ son go through the journey of needing stem cells, we saw how incredibly important it is to try and help whenever we can,” says Lena. “The little boy’s experience opened my eyes to all the work that Canadian Blood Services is doing to help patients, and donating my baby’s cord blood was a fulfilling way for me to play my part.”
