Eligibility Criteria for Obtaining Cord Blood for Research

To obtain cord blood products for research from the Cord Blood for Research Program, the applicant must be affiliated with a Canadian Research Institution (academic, government or private sector).

Prior to applying:

  • The applicant must have received their Institution’s Research Ethics Board approval, (or equivalent) for the research project; and,
  • If applicable, the applicant must have received approval from the Stem Cell Oversight Committee.
    • A research project conducted under the auspices of a Tri-Council Agency-funded institution requires Stem Cell Oversight Committee review if the project involves the derivation of pluripotent stem cells and these cells are transferred into animals. The form to apply for Stem Cell Oversight Committee review is available at: http://www.cihr-irsc.gc.ca/e/documents/stem_cell_ocr_fillable_e.pdf. For more information on Stem Cell Oversight Committee review, see http://www.cihr-irsc.gc.ca/e/15255.html.
    • A research project conducted under the auspices of a Tri-Council Agency-funded institution is exempt from Stem Cell Oversight Committee review, but Stem Cell Oversight Committee notification is required, if the project involves the derivation of pluripotent stem cells and these cells are transferred into animals for the sole purpose of testing for teratoma formation, and animals are not used for reproductive purposes.
