With over 26 scientists and affiliated researchers, Canadian Blood Services is fostering an innovative scientific community with ingenuity and drive. The diverse expertise these scientists bring to the area of transfusion science is propelling Canadian Blood Services into a new era of research excellence. Not only is transfusion science a significant area of research in its own right, it is relevant to the study of drug delivery, cancer treatment, kidney filtration, liver function and blood clots in strokes and heart attacks.

The transfusion of blood products has become such an accepted procedure that the complex composition of blood is easily forgotten. Without the multi-focal research that has advanced transfusion science to where it is today, the life-saving capabilities of transfusion medicine would not exist.

Transfusion Science
The study of all aspects of blood transfusion including but not limited to research on the social and humanitarian aspects of voluntary blood donation, the preparation and storage of blood products for transfusion, the development of substitutes to replace donor-derived blood products, the effects of blood transfusions on the recipient, blood safety, the clinical utilization of blood and conservation practices, the biology of plasma proteins, blood cells and stem cells used for the treatment of disease, and the health outcomes and health policy research related to blood products.
